WHAT WE DO

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Digital Citizenship

We teach digital citizenship from the very beginning of students using the Internet.  Students are taught to navigate the web safely and taught skills on how to determine the purpose of a website and what to do when they click a link they didn't mean to, or get to a website they didn't mean to.  We also teach how to communicate safely online, by not giving out personal information and what to do in the event of someone using cyber-bullying or trying to get personal information.

Google Apps

We use Google Apps for Education for all students grades 2 and up.  Students use email, Google Drive, and the suite of Google Apps to create, collaborate, and share work that they complete in school.  In Tech Integration, students learn how to use these apps and what they can do.

Minecraft Lessons

In Tech Integration, a modded version of Minecraft is used to simulate lessons.  Examples of lessons are computer skills, group survival, real estate, Oregon Trail, and ecosystems.  The students use the software to demonstrate knowledge of the subject while having fun and playing Minecraft.  The modded version of the game allows the teacher complete control over the environment, players, and content of the world, allowing for a rich and guided gameplay experience.

Computer Science

In Tech Integration, students learn about basic computer science skills.  Starting with very easy puzzles that require students to give sequential directions to guide a character to the end of a level.  From there we add certain coding terms, such as loops, conditions, and variables.  Ultimately ending in 5th grade by creating their own game on Scratch that can be shared with other students.

Kerbal Space Program

Kerbal Space Program is a space simulator that allows the students to create a space program, build rockets, and go into space.  The students who complete this unit create a persuasive paper to procure funds for their space program and then journal their experiences as they play the game, staying in contact with their "boss".  The students use real life physics to create their rocket and conduct research to unlock more space shuttle parts to allow for further space exploration.

Digital Photography

Starting in 2nd grade, students learn how to take digital photos.  We focus on the rule of thirds to line up and take better pictures.  Students also learn about close up photography and are able to practice taking pictures around the school.
